As the UK takes back competence for trade policy following the EU referendum, consideration must be given to the impact of UK trade arrangements on countries in the Global South.

The UK has committed to carry over existing EU arrangements that give preferential market access to Southern countries and to explore opportunities to expand these relationships. However, there is a disparity between the UK’s historical approach to trade policy and Southern countries’ development objectives.

The UK must bring existing and future trade agreements into line with international human rights and environmental commitments and Southern countries’ development agendas.
